Web 2.0 - The Read-Write Web

The Internet is changing as we know it! It has gone from a primarily text based information system to being an interactive system rich with audio visual and graphic detail. Will Richardson defines Web 2.0 as the "Read-Write" web. This means that the web is no longer only "readable." Now, we can change, delete, or update information in real time. Web 2.0 Also refers to the wealth of tools that can be used to collaborate online. Some web 2.0 tools include Jing, Skype, TeacherTube, and Second Life. Some important concepts to ponder are:

  • The web is not just linking information, it is linking people

  • Classrooms will become the Media Centers to the world!

  • We are preparing students today for careers that do not yet exist!

With the implementation of Web 2.0, we must take several things into account. We must realize that a new set of skill need to be taught. Students will now need to know how to effectively question, validate, and analyze the wealth of information they come across. Also as important is the need for professional development on the tools available for teachers. Teachers need to have a sound knowledge of how Web 2.0 tools work in order to effectively use them in the classroom. Lastly, We need to think about safety on the web. There are a myriad of ways for people to steal another persons personal identity.
